How are particles used in the Russian language?
If you stumble over a small, untranslatable word in a sentence, it might be a particle! It’s a functional part of speech that helps express shades of meaning and can also participate in forming word forms. There are a great many particles in the Russian language.
Good news – particles do not change (so you don't have to worry about cases and declines!).
Particles are typically divided into two categories: formative and semantic.
Formative particles are those used to form conditional and imperative moods of verbs:
- ‘бы’ – marker of the conditional mood: "Я бы хотел выучить русский" (“I would like to learn Russian”).
- ‘пусть’, ‘пускай’, ‘да’, ‘давай(те)’ – markers of the imperative mood: "Пусть ребенок сам научится читать" (“Let the child learn to read by themselves”).
Semantic particles express shades of meaning, feelings and attitudes of the speaker. For example:
- Negative: ‘не’, ‘ни’, ‘вовсе не’, ‘далеко не’, ‘отнюдь не’ – "Я не говорю по-русски" (“I don't speak Russian”).
- Interrogative: неужели, разве, ли (ль) – "А ты разве не говоришь по-русски?" (Wait, you do speak Russian, don't you?).
- Demonstrative: ‘вот’, ‘вон’, ‘это’ – "Вот этот мальчик хорошо читает" (“This boy right here reads well”).
- Clarifying: ‘именно’, ‘как раз’, ‘прямо’, ‘точно’, ‘точь-в-точь’ – "Я как раз сейчас собирался пойти учить русский" (“I was just about to go study Russian”).
- Restrictive / emphatic: ‘только’, ‘лишь’, ‘исключительно’, ‘почти’, ‘единственно’, ‘-то’ – "Я почти выучил русский" (“I have almost learned Russian”).
- Exclamatory: ‘что за’, ‘ну и’, ‘как’ – "Ну и как ты собираешься учить русский, если не хочешь запомнить слова!" (“So, how exactly do you plan to learn Russian if you don't want to memorize words?!”).
- Intensifying: ‘даже’, ‘же’, ‘ни’, ‘ведь’, ‘уж’, ‘все-таки’, ‘ну’ – "Я ведь уже год учу русский!" (“But, I've already been studying Russian for a year!”).
- Expressing doubt: ‘едва ли’, ‘вряд ли’ – "Я вряд ли запомню окончания падежей" (“I'm unlikely to remember the case endings”).
There are also polysemous particles. For example, ‘ни’ is used to intensify a negation: "В комнате не слышно ни звука" (“Not a single sound is heard in the room”). Or as a negation itself when there is no verb or predicate: "В комнате ни звука" (“Not a sound in the room”).
Do not confuse particles with postfixes (‘-то’, ‘-либо’, ‘-нибудь’) , which are written with a hyphen!
