How to start learning Russian – tips from an American! (VIDEO)

Want to learn the language, but don't know what to begin with? Tim's here to help you out!

You’ve been learning Russian for a while now, but still can't speak it?

Here’re some tips on how to go through this language barrier!

First of all, learn phrases, not separate words.

  • Привет! Меня зовут Тим, а как тебя? (Hi, my name is Tim, what’s your name?)
  • Я родился в Америке, но живу в России. А откуда ты родом? (I was born in America but live in Russia. Where are you from?)

Remember a couple of phrases that can be handy in real life.

  • Сколько это стоит? (How much does it cost?)
  • Как пройти к метро? (How can I get to the metro?)

Secondly, listen to a lot of Russian speech. Podcasts, reels, shorts, Russian TV shows and old Soviet movies with subtitles. The more you hear real life phrases, the faster you’ll start speaking.

You can even stop the video and repeat some phrases….

And last but not least, just start speaking. Right away. Don’t be afraid of mistakes. Russians usually are amazed that a foreigner speaks their language, and will try to understand you and help you anyway.
