Russians call him “our everything.” Why? Because he wasn’t just a poet – he was a rock star of 19th-century literature.
Fairy tales, poems, historical dramas, plays – he did it all, and he did it brilliantly.
His most famous work, 'Eugene Onegin', is referred to as 'the encyclopedia of Russian life'. And it’s actually quite witty and easy to read.
It may surprise you, but, before Pushkin, Russian wasn’t yet the language of effortless modern literature. The elite spoke French.
Pushkin changed all that: he made Russian sound natural, elegant and alive. In fact, he created the modern Russian we speak today.
That’s why June 6th – his birthday – is actually Russian Language Day.
